"Lifesharing" means living in the private home of a person who provides support for one or two individuals with mental retardation.
"Family Living" officially began in Pennsylvania in 1982 when a family in Berks County agreed to provide support to a person with mental retardation living in their home.
As of January, 2000, there are over 700 poeple living with families and companions across almost all Pennsylvania counties.
To reflect the diversity of relationships in these living arrangements, we are now calling family living, 'Lifesharing through Family Living' to better describe the lifestyles and choices of those we support.
State Subcommittee
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Lifesharing through Family Living Subcommittee is to promote, support, and embrace the concept of Lifesharing throughout the Commonwealth; the philosophy of self-determination; and the lifestyles and choices of those we support.
Over the years, this group has played an important role in the growth of Lifesharing throughout Pennsylvania. Participation can provide the opportunity for networking, sharing information and keeping informed of current issues.
State Coordinator's Group
This group was established in 1988, to provide opportunities for training, support and fellowship.
Agendas are designed by the participants of the group to ensure that common needs are addressed. There is a tremendous amount of information, experience and resources available!
We invite you to come together with us to listen to, learn from, and celebrate with one another.
Join the Move!
The State Subcommittee meets the third Thursday of every other month; the Coordinators' Group meets the day before -- on Wednesday.
These meetings are held at beautiful Warm Springs Lodge in Landisburg, PA -- centrally located and easily accessible! Overnight accommodations are available.
People from all regions of the State participate. We welcome YOU to attend -- and look forward to seeing you there!
Regional Subcommittees
The four regions in Pennsylvania have their own Subcommittees. Your Regional Subcommittee can offer: networking, technical assistance, recruitment strategies, mentorships, licensing supports and training based on your needs!
Through the help and hands-on assistance of the regional Subcommittees, no provider agency or family is ever alone. The Regional Subcommittees help organize potluck dinners and other events to give families and provider agencies the chance to share their experiences.
